Thursday Musical Young Artist Scholarship Competition

Saturday, March 13, 2010: PIANO & GUITAR CATEGORIES

Sunday, march 14, 2010: STRING, WIND & VOICE CATEGORIES

QUALIFICATIONS:

1.        Contestants must be a current member of the THURSDAY MUSICAL Student Section.

2.        Contestants must have appeared on one THURSDAY MUSICAL Student Recital during the current season (Not required for College students).

3.        Competition applications must be postmarked or delivered on or before February 1, 2010.

4.        Former THURSDAY MUSICAL first place winners may not compete in the same category in which they have won, nor will they be permitted to progress to the next category before they qualify by grade level.

5.        Professional performers, including Thursday Musical Artists, may not enter.

 

 

COMPETITION PERFORMANCE:

1.        Contestants must perform, FROM MEMORY, two compositions from two different periods (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Contemporary).  These pieces should be contrasting in style, technique, tempo, etc.  (The memory requirement is waived for the Winds Category ONLY.)

2.        Contestants are allowed a maximum performance time of 8 minutes.  Cuts may be made.

3.        College vocal contestants must sing one song in English and one in a foreign language.

4.        Contestants must provide their own accompanist.

5.        Contestants will perform at the assigned contest time.

 

 

JUDGING AND RATINGS:

1.        An original copy, not a photocopy, of each composition must be furnished for use by the judges.  A copy of the piano score is STRONGLY preferred (not the solo part) for those soloists performing with accompaniments.  Accompanists must have an original copy, not a photocopy.  Use of photocopies by a contestant or accompanist may result in the disqualification of the contestant.

2.        Judges reserve the right to hear only a portion of the contestant’s prepared compositions.

3.        Only the judges, a timekeeper and a page-turner if needed, are present at the contest performance.

4.        Prizes will be awarded at the discretion of the judges.

5.        All contestants’ critique sheets will be mailed.

6.        Winners will be notified of contest results by telephone.

7.        A category must have minimum of 5 enrollees.

 

 

 

REMINDER – PERFORMANCE CATEGORIES:

 

PIANO, STRINGS, WINDS:

Junior High – grades 7-9

Senior High – grades 10-12

College – Students who will be 25 or under by February 1, 2010

 

VOICE:          Senior High

College Intermediate – age 20 or younger by February 1, 2010

College Advanced – age 21-25 by February 1, 2010

 

GUITAR:       Junior & Senior High – Grades 7 –12

College – Students who will be 25 or under by February 1, 2010
